The Science Behind ALMA

The Science

Three decades of research.
One simple rhythm.

ALMA is inspired by the bilateral stimulation used in EMDR therapy, a structured psychotherapy developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s and studied for over thirty years.

Here is what the research actually says, in plain language.

01  Proven where it mattered most

EMDR therapy has been deployed in the aftermath of some of the most traumatic events of our time, to help survivors and first responders process what they lived through.

2001

New York

After September 11, EMDR clinicians treated survivors and first responders. A published clinical study reported significant reductions in trauma symptoms following treatment.

2004

Indian Ocean

After the tsunami, EMDR humanitarian programs brought the therapy to thousands of survivors across Southeast Asia, with field studies reporting strong relief of post-traumatic symptoms.

2015

Paris

After the November attacks, French psychological emergency units used EMDR to support victims. It is recommended by French health authorities for post-traumatic stress.

02  Why a left right rhythm

In EMDR sessions, therapists guide patients through alternating left-right stimulation: eye movements, sounds, or gentle taps. Handheld tactile pulsers, often called tappers, are one of the most common tools. Researchers have three leading explanations for why this rhythm calms the nervous system.

I.

The working-memory effect

Your attention has limited bandwidth. When a gentle external rhythm occupies part of it, distressing thoughts lose intensity. They become harder to hold at full emotional volume. This is one of the best-supported explanations in EMDR research.

II.

The REM-sleep connection

During REM sleep, your eyes naturally move left and right while your brain processes the emotions of the day. Bilateral stimulation may engage similar processing mechanisms while you are awake.

III.

The orienting response

Slow, rhythmic, predictable stimulation appears to trigger the body's natural "it's safe now" reflex. Studies have observed physiological calming, including slower heart rate, during this kind of stimulation.

03  Recognized by the world's health authorities

World Health Organization

Recommends EMDR therapy for PTSD in adults and children in its 2013 guidelines on conditions specifically related to stress.

American Psychological Association

Recommends EMDR therapy for the treatment of PTSD in its 2017 Clinical Practice Guideline.

U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs & Department of Defense

Recommend EMDR as a treatment for PTSD in their joint clinical practice guidelines.

05  Straight answers

Is ALMA the same as EMDR therapy?

No. EMDR is a complete, structured psychotherapy delivered by a trained clinician. Bilateral stimulation is one component of it. ALMA borrows that component as a simple self-soothing tool. It is inspired by EMDR, not a substitute for it.

Is there research on ALMA specifically?

Not yet. The research above concerns EMDR therapy and bilateral stimulation in general, including tactile stimulation delivered by handheld tappers in clinical settings. We are honest about this distinction. It is also why ALMA comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee: the only way to know how your body responds is to try it.

Why don't you promise it will fix my anxiety?

Because no honest brand can. People respond differently to bilateral stimulation. Many of our customers describe feeling calmer, more grounded, and less tense. Some notice it within minutes, others after a few sessions, and for some it does less. That is the truth, and we would rather you buy knowing it.
